Luce County Jail, located in Newberry, Michigan, traces its roots back to the establishment of Luce County in 1887. The original jail was a wooden structure built in 1888. It was a small, two-story building with a capacity of only eight inmates.
1920s-1950s
In 1924, the wooden jail was replaced with a more permanent brick structure. The new jail had a capacity of 24 inmates and included modern amenities such as running water and indoor plumbing.
The 1950s saw a significant increase in the county's population and crime rate. As a result, the jail was expanded in 1958 to accommodate 48 inmates.
1960s-1980s
During the 1960s and 1970s, Luce County Jail underwent several renovations to improve its security and living conditions for inmates. In 1968, a new wing was added to the jail, bringing its capacity to 72 inmates.
In the early 1980s, the jail was expanded again to accommodate 120 inmates. This expansion included the addition of a new intake area, a gymnasium, and a medical clinic.
1990s-Present
In 1997, Luce County Jail became accredited by the American Correctional Association (ACA). This accreditation recognizes the jail's commitment to providing safe and humane conditions for inmates and staff.
Over the past decade, the jail has continued to undergo renovations to improve its infrastructure and security. In 2012, a new control room was added to the jail, and in 2018, a new security system was installed.
